The ZLA Standard Training Materials Project (STM)

The ZLA STM is a project that was undertaken in Summer 2009 to create a ground school type course for ZLA controllers. It is designed to condense all the resources from the real world, VATSIM, VATUSA, and ZLA into 1 location. It can be viewed as a one stop shop for everything a controller needs to know. The material is continuously updated and maintained by the ZLA training staff. The STM is run by the Training Materials Manager.

The STM was designed around a variety of materials. The main resource in the STM is the master outline. The master outline is this course that you are currently taking and is the one stop reference referred to above. Additionally various secondary materials will be added over time to enhance the master outline. These materials are currently in development.

While the master outline is designed to be applicable to all controllers in USA, it is a ZLA document with focus on ZLA procedures. To help separate the ZLA specific material from the general ATC material, the following conventions are used in the remainder of the master outline:

- General black text consists of discussion about a specific point applicable to all USA controllers.
- Controller phraseology will be given in green.
- Pilot radio calls will be given in blue.
- Specific techniques (normally ZLA specific) will be in italics.
- Material only applicable to ZLA will be underlined.
